Three years ago, financial veteran Angelica Lips da Cruz created Innorbis with the ambition of building the market's broadest and most complete sustainability analysis. Today, not least with a push from new legislation, she is well on her way.

The financial veteran's tool looks at sustainability work

[text](link)Stockholm (NordSIP) –  INNORBIS has announced a partnership with Kommuninvest, Kristianstad University, City of Umeå, RISE, SEI, Samariterhemmet Diakoni and Viable Cities through KTH to develop a new framework and standards in sustainable business financing and investment. The project, called a Tool for integration of sustainability measures in financial analysis, is financed by Vinnova and will be presented during an event on May 26th.

“The tool evaluates value growth and monitors the development of the factors that are relevant to meet the results we want – a positive effect in our society and the planet we want to live on. This tool enables the basis for a new, holistic, financial risk scale integrated with ESG and sustainability measurements. It is a marriage between climate action and sustainability, ethics management and finance for our generation in transition. This is the product that will change the market,” Angelica Lips da Cruz, founder and CEO of Innorbis, says (Pictured).

The project is motivated by increased demand for a joint measure of sustainability usable by cities, businesses and the financial sector when estimating whether projects actually have a positive effect on societal sustainable development. The tool under development by the tool under development by INNORBIS focuses on scalability and facilitating priorities in the decision-making processes for financing, investment and asset management.

“We see a need for increased knowledge about how sustainability factors can affect the Swedish municipal sector financially. This can apply to the impact of climate change and climate adaptation measures as well as other climate and environmental goals, including nature conservation and biodiversity. By participating in this project, we hope to be able to gain valuable insights in this knowledge field based on a solid empirical basis,” adds Björn Bergstrand, Head of Sustainability at Kommuninvest.

“Mapping impact measurement in support of the 17 SDGs means abandoning the usual approach to sustainability metrics, where every indicator is treated as a separate universe, a silo, scaled in its own ordinal ranking metric,” explains a report by the authors. “In the new art and science of sustainability measurement, we take into account the interdependencies among the different SDGs.

We know all of our indicators work together to provide coherent, consolidated measures, and we know what data-based and theoretical consistencies make sense.” The presentation adds that “instead of interpreting multiple indicators in terms of a sustainability construct organized at a higher-order complexity, that construct needs itself to be mapped, modelled, and measured.”

Tackling the UN SDGs’ Measurement Problems

The main issue Lips Da Cruz observed when she started her venture, was the lack of reliable data to enable sound decision making, particularly in the ‘S’ and ‘G’ dimensions. The scarcity of ESG measurements was especially striking when confronted with the abundance of metrics available for the analysis of ‘F’. Accounting standards were developed and refined over decades to provide investors with reliable measures of cash and profitability. After the implementation of IFRS, comparability between geographies also became possible.

“I couldn’t stay on the sidelines watching,” says Lips Da Cruz. “During my years in risk management, I looked mainly at the ‘F’, but I wanted to look at the risk in the other dimensions too. What risk do we incur if we don’t reach the targets set by the Paris agreement? We know that a risk exists if we don’t change, but how can we quantify it? I needed to find a scientific method to get there.”
